Phoenix: The new seed harvest has arrived!
As you have come to expect from us, we keep you regularly informed about new harvests, special products and exciting opportunities. This time, we would like to highlight our beautiful Phoenix. With increasing sunshine hours and holiday anticipation, everyone is ready for a tropical surprise and a summer vibe. Phoenix, also known as Date palm, is ideal to create this sunny admosphere.
We recently received fresh seeds from a new harvest of Phoenix roebelenii. Its big brother, Phoenix canariensis, has been a regular item in our assortment for years. Let’s take a closer look at these two palms.
A tropical ambience
Phoenix is a strong date palm with gracious leaves, which only becomes more attractive over time by developing a tough, robust trunk. Phoenix is reasonably frost-resistant and does best as a tub plant in a sunny patio or conservatory. In warmer climates, Phoenix is also suitable for the garden and for landscaping.
Phoenix roebelenii and Phoenix canariensis are both stunning and strong. They differ in various points:
Phoenix roebelenii
• Origin: Asia, Laos, Vietnam and South China, humid areas
• Common name: Pygmy date palm
• Leaves: Feathery, bright green
• Trunk: Rough, slender
• Type: Relatively small (to 2,5 m)
• Hardiness: can be placed outside in summer (and year-round in warmer climates)
• Growth: slow to average speed
Phoenix canariensis
• Origin: Canary Islands, Africa, humid to dry areas
• Common name: Canary Island date palm
• Leaves: Feathery, deep green
• Trunk: Rough, thick
• Type: One of the largest date palms (to 12 m)
• Hardiness: tolerates low temperatures, but cannot withstand freezing
• Growth: relatively fast speed
