Asparagus virgatus is native to eastern and southern Africa, where it grows as an evergreen perennial shrub in shady understorey spots in tropical and subtropical areas. It is mainly grown for cut foliage production. Asparagus virgatus is commonly known as Tree fern or Broom asparagus. Other internationally used common names are: Tiki fern, African broom fern, makkatdoring, katstertjie; ibutha, ihabiya, iphinganhloya, unwele.
