ON TOUR: Snapdragon trial in the Sabana of Bogotá

ON TOUR: Snapdragon trial in the Sabana of Bogotá

This month, in the Sabana of Bogotá, a versatile range of Antirrhinum majus F1 from Evanthia was in full bloom during an inspiring trial hosted by Plazoleta Flowers. The trial attracted a diverse group of growers from Colombia and Ecuador over the course of three days – a valuable opportunity for knowledge sharing and hands-on observation.

The trial was not only a display of genetic diversity, but also of Evanthia’s global ambition: to create growing possibilities for Snapdragons under varying conditions, anywhere in the world. From South America to Europe and Asia – with a broad and carefully curated range, Evanthia offers growers maximum flexibility and reliability.

Locally tested, globally applicable

The Antirrhinum trial took place in a greenhouse typically used for cultivating Alstroemeria – a crop that requires similar cultivation conditions to Snapdragons. This setting enabled a realistic assessment of the Antirrhinum range’s performance.

Evanthia presented varieties from groups 2–3 (Cannes), 3–4 (Orléans) and 4–5 (Toulon): from commercial favourites to promising experimentals. The wide offering allows growers to respond to market demand and shifting climatic conditions all year round.

“For growers, it’s incredibly valuable that we set up trials locally, under their own climatic conditions,” says Peter van Noort, Product Manager Flowers at Evanthia. “In Colombia, this approach literally lowers the threshold. The strength of this trial lies in the combination of breeding expertise, local relevance and transparency. Growers don’t have to rely on a catalogue – they see the plants in action, in their own climate.”

Situated among the commercial crops of the prestigious Plazoleta Snapdragon label ‘Perfection Line’, the trial offered a realistic and representative view of how the varieties perform in local greenhouses. For growers, this means quicker decision-making and more targeted selection.

Sonia Janssen and Peter van Noort look back on the international gathering with satisfaction. “The conversations with growers provided valuable insights,” says Sonia. “They highlight the importance of local collaboration and show how our broad range and international experience can support a variety of cultivation strategies.”
