Dry January • Succulents in close-up

19 January 2024 -
Dry January • Succulents in close-up

Dry January is a well-known international campaign with the aim of becoming more alcohol conscious. Evanthia likes to take this inspiring initiative a little wider this month: being more conscious about water and watering our indoor and garden plants in particular. Climate change is affecting our weather patterns and making them more extreme, as well as making natural resources more limited. It requires changes in our behaviour, more efficient water use and making different choices when making purchases.

Succulents are a broad group of plants with a special, typical characteristic: they can store water in their leaves, stems, trunks or roots and can therefore withstand prolonged periods of drought. Moreover, they often have unusual shapes and colours and are very easy to care for. Let’s take a closer look at the succulents in our range.

Evanthia's succulents top 10

Aloe: Holds water easily in its fleshy leaves, adapts well in dry conditions. Check out the broad range of varieties.

Adenium: Has a swollen stem or caudex to store water. Few leaves so moisture loss is minimal. Beautiful flowers!

Beaucarnea/Nolina: Another succulent that stores water in a stem or caudex. Robust plant that does well in an environment where watering/supply is irregular.

Dasylirion: Rosette-forming, evergreen plants with often spiny leaves. Well adapted to arid and semi-arid conditions and often found in desert areas.

Jatropha: Also called the “Buddha belly plant” because of its swollen, bulbous stem, which stores water.

Pachypodium: Caudiciform succulents with many unusual growth modes. Besides the well-known P. lamerei and P. geayi, we regularly have fresh crop of more rare Pachypodium varieties in our range. READ MORE

Peperomia: Semi-succulent plants with fleshy leaves and petioles, and low water requirements and great adaptability.

Pilea: Extraordinary (fleshy) leaf shapes, textures and colours make Pilea irresistible. Semi-succulent. Easy to grow and available as young plants from cuttings. READ MORE

Senecio: Also called Kleinia neriifolia. Has an upright or proliferative growth habit, with the fleshy leaves along the stems.

Yucca: Stores water in the leaves. Roset-shaped growth habit, allowing water to pass efficiently to the heart of the plant.

Versatile succulents

Due to their high ornamental value, convenience and low maintenance, succulents can be used in many ways in our green surroundings. They are popular houseplants and do well in trendy decorations. In addition, the more robust varieties can also be processed well in gardens, rock gardens or xeriscaping/landscaping projects aimed at water conservation.

TREND ALERT: Thanks to their low water requirements, succulents are increasingly seen in creative projects such as wall-art/green walls, wreaths and terrariums.
