Trials that matter: Sharing knowledge, spotting differences, shaping the future

At the trial site of grower G. van den Beukel in Monster, The Netherlands, Antirrhinum and Matthiola took centre stage once again during Evanthia’s annual flowering trials in June. The set-up attracted visitors from both the Netherlands and abroad, offering ample opportunity for in-depth discussions, practical insights, and exploration of emerging market opportunities.

A unique look at the full spectrum of snapdragons

What makes this annual flowering trials particularly remarkable is the approach to the Antirrhinum trials. Through a clever sowing and cultivation strategy, all group categories – from Group I to Group V – flower more or less simultaneously. This creates a rare, comprehensive view of Evanthia’s full Antirrhinum assortment, including the robust Toulon IV–V series. Specifically bred for cultivation in warmer climates, this series will be extended in January 2026 with five new, intense colours – including the elegant (currently Exp.) Toulon Apricot, and the richly coloured Toulon Deep Red, Deep Rose and Deep Purple. These new additions maintain their quality and stem length even under high temperatures and light intensity.

Matthiola highlights: StoX® and Milla steal the show

In Matthiola, Evanthia presented its complete colour range across five different series, with the innovative StoX® series and versatile Milla line taking the spotlight. Visitors were also given an exclusive preview of four new colours – three within StoX®, one within Milla – which will be available for limited trials starting January 2026. Commercial release is expected in 2027.

The StoX® series continues to stand out for its selectability on doubleness at seedling stage, strong plant habit, short cultivation time, high uniformity and excellent vase life. Milla distinguishes itself with powerful stems, a broad colour range including purple and aubergine, and efficient production – making it an attractive option for both premium and price-driven markets.

Summerflowers on tour

One of this year’s highlights was the visit from the Summerflowers network. A colourful group of growers and traders toured several trial locations and open days in the Westland region aboard the iconic yellow American school bus – with the Evanthia trial as a major stop along the way.

“What makes these trials so valuable is the complete picture they provide and the space for genuine dialogue,” said Henk van den Berg, founder of Summerflowers. “There were many interesting conversations about heat resistance, market potential and personal preferences. You really see how experiences come together – and everyone takes something from it. Initiatives like this deserve to be visited in groups much more often. We had plenty to talk about on the way back.”

More than a moment in time

Evanthia’s flowering trials are becoming a fixed feature in the season. Strategically scheduled around weeks 23, 24 and 25, they offer growers, traders and breeders a valuable opportunity to exchange up-to-date market information and explore new developments. The focus is on forward-thinking, energy-efficient cultivation with added value for every link in the chain – from propagation to vase.
